The BSL-4 Core Facility is a university facility; it is used to examine highly pathogenic viruses for which neither vaccines nor therapy are available. The establishment of the laboratory based on the so-called Marburg virus outbreak in 1967. Since this event, research has been going on in Marburg on highly pathogenic, zoonotic viruses.
