Hybrid operating rooms – the multifunctional OR with imaging systems

The advances of information and medical technology and the presence of increasingly sophisticated, minimally invasive surgical methods in combination with intra-operative imaging is giving rise to hybrid ORs equipped with angiography systems, computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners.

Ever more operating methods are being developed that require three-dimensional imaging technologies to simultaneously enable diagnosis, surgical procedures and success monitoring. Furthermore, such a room can be used not only as an OR with intra-operative imaging but also in a hybrid manner to increase its efficiency – namely as both an operating room and a purely diagnostic area.

The areas of application for a hybrid operating room include surgical procedures in all areas where interdisciplinary interaction between imaging procedures during an operation and modern surgical methods or minimally invasive procedures are required.

In comparison to normal OR areas, the planning and realisation of hybrid operation rooms is particularly complex as it must also take into account the requirements of diagnostic systems, especially with regard to radiation protection, high-frequency shielding, soundproofing and additional spaces for checks, diagnosis and technology. HT cooperates with all leading manufacturers of imaging systems to create the best possible working environment for doctors, surgeons and nurses. Our modular room system allows for flexible, forward-looking planning and realisation of complex hybrid rooms.

Examples of the integration of intraoperative imaging in the hybrid operating room

Floor-mounted C-arm

Robot-assisted multi-axis angiography system
Less space required, free operating theatre ceiling. A TAV ceiling is possible without any problems and a 1A room is not affected.

Ceiling-mounted systems

High flexibility for multidisciplinary use.
Access to the patient from both sides is possible. Full floor clearance allows monitors, equipment and accessories to be positioned as required.

Kombinierte Bildgebungssysteme

Computed tomogr. Magnetic res. imaging

Large space requirement
Installed on rails, the systems can be used as required in the operating room environment or removed from the operating area.

Focal points for operations in the hybrid operating room

Intraoperative imaging in the hybrid operating room is used for various surgical treatments for diseases that require high-precision imaging during the procedure.  A hybrid solution combines conventional and minimally invasive procedures, which significantly improves safety, precision and treatment success in complex operations.
