High Safety Laboratories – BSL-3 laboratories
BSL 3 laboratories deal with biological agents of risk group 3 which are airborne and can cause serious diseases in humans and animals. Current example is CoViD-19.
For pathogens of risk group 3, laboratory units of protection level 3 (BSL 3) are demanded. For such high safety laboratories, national and international standards stipulate, among others, the following requirements:
- Spatial separation of the laboratories from other parts of the building
- Special tightness requirements apply, as, for instance, the VDI 2083, Sheet 19.
- All surfaces must be suitable to be decontaminated and resistant to disinfectants.
- Appropriate transfer solutions and airlocks need to be available for people, equipment and samples.
