6th International Conference on Biosafety and Laboratory Technology is back as conference in attendance

From 27th until 29th of November 2022, international experts met for the 6th International Conference on Biosafety and Laboratory Technology in the lecture hall of castle Hirschberg. After the corona restrictions in the Free State of Bavaria were largely lifted, the conference could be held in attendance again after 3 years.

The participants and speakers came from over 15 countries worldwide, including Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, the Netherlands, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Poland, Hungary, Ukraine, USA, Kenya, Mexico, Canada, China, etc. Simultaneous translation made it possible the conference will be held in both German and English. The participants had just to decide for a channel and were able to take part in the discussions interactively. The organizer of the international biosafety conferences has been German LabConCert GmbH in cooperation with the HT Group and TÜV Süd since 2017. In a total of 10 lectures from 6 countries, projects, systems and procedures were presented, which dealt with the planning, approval, construction and operation of biosafety laboratories.

MSc. Luis Alberto Ochoa Carrera (Michigan State University / USA), Dr. Willy Kiprotich Tonui (Environmental Health and Safety Ltd. / Kenya) and CEng. Mark Wheatley (Environment and Services Ltd. / England) presented the current status of the establishment of safety laboratories in developing and emerging countries. Dr. Jürgen Mertsching (Hannover Medical University / Germany) and Dr. Andreas Kurth (Robert Koch Institute / Germany) showed the user's point of view in their lectures. BSc. Evelien Kampert (Netherlands) and Dipl.-Ing. Thomas Hinrichs (Berner International GmbH / Germany) presented the qualification of system solutions. Ing. Gerwin te Slaa (MEET RIVM CBG BV / Netherlands) and B. Eng. Chris Kiley (Merrick & Company / Canada) reported on the successful establishment of safety laboratories in the USA and Europe.

In a dialogue lecture on the construction and operation of animal facilities from the point of view of manufacturers and operators between Dipl.-Ing. Detlef Reichenbacher (former technical manager RKI) and Dipl.-Ing. Claus Schweinheim (HT Group / Germany) a new format for the conference was presented for the first time. Both discussed how projects can be successfully implemented despite the different perspectives of those involved in the construction, based on projects that have already been completed, such as the recently completed renovation of the animal facility at the Robert Koch Institute.

In an intensive workshop, the HT Group presented fully welded HEPA filter housings with an integrated scanner, which are already in use in various biosafety laboratories. At the end of the conference, Rajka Fritsch, Managing Director of German LabConCert GmbH, was very satisfied with the event and the number of participants.
