SAFETY LEVEL 4

There are only a few laboratories at the highest biosafety level 4 in Germany.
An exact number worldwide is also not known, as research is carried out in these laboratories with biological substances
and pathogens with the highest risk level.

These pathogens cause infections and illnesses which are mostly deadly for humans.
Research on antidotes is undertaken in high-security laboratories under the highest possible security conditions.
Multi-stage sluice systems for materials and staff, a closed stainless steel containment area, gas-tight doors
and a series of other measures are taken to protect staff and the population from any possible spreading of the pathogens.

RISK GROUP 4

Risk group 4 includes biological substances which can cause severe illness among humans. Neither effective prevention nor treatment is possible so that there exists a risk of a further spread of the material among the population. Examples of this are types of viral haemorrhagic fever (Ebola, Hanta, Lassa, Marburg) and smallpox etc.

SECURED ROOMS WITHIN BUILDINGS (containment)

Further safety measures apply in addition to the structural requirements of protection level 3.

// Separate air, water and power supply
// All areas and opening for supply and waste lines must be gas-tight and secured against backflow
// Emergency power generators and backup batteries must be present to ensure fail-safe operation; redundant systems
// Unauthorised persons may not be able to gain close proximity to the high-security laboratory
// Access control systems, video surveillance and other safety measures
// Hygienic barriers (personnel and material sluices)
// Able to be gassed
// Waste water must be gathered and sterilised
// Lab technicians work in protective suits with a breathing air supply
// Personnel may only leave via a disinfectant sluice
// Material can only be brought out via an autoclave or immersion sluice
